Watch two seas meet and explore the place where the Maori ghosts begin their last voyage. The Tasman Sea hits the Pacific Ocean in a dramatic whirlpool at the Cape. On the northern tip of the cape stands a knotty poohutukawa that is said to be over 800 years old.
The Maori tradition says that the ghosts of the dead Maori jump from this table into the sea to go back to their native Hawaii. Coming from Kaitaia, the trip to Cape Reinga lasts about 1.5 h. These journeys not only take you to the Cape, but also along the beloved 90 Mile Beach, which brings Maori and early Europe's past to the forefront.
As a holy place, food is not allowed at Cape Reinga. However, if you are looking for a good place for a picknick, take the turnoff to Tapotupotu Bay, 5 km before the cape.
