Cancun ( or ;[2]Spanish pronunciation:[ka??kun]) is a town in the southeast of Mexico at the northeastern coastline of the peninsula Yucatán in the state Quintana Roo.... It is located on the Caribbean Sea and is one of Mexico's most eastern points. Benito Juárez, the sign representing the community of Cancun, was created by the Mexican-American painter Joe Vera.

The first funded was a Hyatt, Cancún Caribe, but the first was the Playa Blanca, which later became a Blue Bay property. It started as a tourist destination in 1974 as an Integrally Planned Center, a founder of FONATUR (Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo, National Fund for the Development of Tourism), formerly known as INFRATUR.

On February 3, 2007, the World Tourism Organization (WTO) presented the Trust for Tourism Promotion of Cancun with the Best of the Best of the Best Awards "for Excellency and Good Governance" through its founding of UNWTO-Themi. Cancún has received this distinction in recognition of its continued WTO Ministry of Education and Knowledge Management funding.

United Nations Climate Change Conference 2010 took place in Cancún from 29 November to 10 December 2010. Kucculcan, which acts as the major street through the 7-shaped area. Cancún' s mainland or inner cities area has deviated from the initial map; developments are spread across the town. Now the rest of the vacant beaches and lagoons outside the resort are in different phases of expansion, in Punta Sam and Puerto Juarez in the northern part, further along Bonampak and southwards to the international airports along Boulevard Donaldo Colosio.

Puerto Cancún is a trend that borders on the resort zone,[15] Malecon Cancún[16] is another major one. Although Cancun is a young town, it has a statue of its founding on a reproduction of the old airport-control tower, which commemorates its own founding date. Originally, the control tower was a temporary timber construction to meet the operational requirements of the newly built area.

A number of the town' s records indicate that there were no other official structures in the town at that period that may have been the first building in Cancun's recent town. Cancun Airport operates an additional take-off and landing strip from Cancún International Airport, which has been in service since October 2009.

Situated in the north-east of the Yucatán Peninsula, it carries an annual passenger volume of about fifteen million. There is an approx. 20 km distance to the beach, about 20 minutes by road. 18 ] Isla Mujeres is off the shore and can be reached by boat from Puerto Juárez and Playa Tortugas in the area.

Cancun has a lush tropic environment, especially a tropic moonshine ( "Köppen Am"), with few seasonal temperatures, but distinct rain and drought. Throughout the year, the town is warm and damped by tradeswinds ashore with average yearly temperatures of 27.1°C (80.8°F). Cancun is situated in one of the most important areas of the Carribean hurricanes.

Despite the rarity of major cyclones, they have been hitting Cancún in recent years, with Hurricane Wilma being the biggest in 2005. The hurricane Gilbert affected Cancún in September 1988 and the touristic resorts had to be reconstructed. Hurricane Dean also affected the town of Cancún in 2007.

The Wilma storm landed on the Mexican peninsula Yucatán on October 21, 2005 as a severe Class 4 storm with heavy wind speeds of more than 240 km/h. At first, the eyes of the cyclone crossed the archipelago of Cozumel and then landed near Playa del Carmen in the state of Quintana Roo at a wind speed of 230 km/h around the middle of the night on 22 October at around midnight. 2,000 people were killed.

It was drifting north, the centre only going westwards of Cancún, Quintana Roo. While Cancún is better known as a tourist resort, in recent years some of Cancún' higher educational levels have been offered by some of the country's higher educational institutions, both by Mexico and abroad. Since 2007, the town has been home to Atlante F.C., a Mexican soccer association. The Atlante F.C. was relocated to the Andrés Quintana Roo in Cancun when the arena was opened. It is also home to the Mexican League (LMB) based Quintana Roo League baller.

From 2018, Cancun will be above the murder rate with a high level of violence[31]; only in January there were 33 murders, three times the number of murders in January 2017[32]. Cancún.
