Buy at last a Life
Finally buying a lifeThis new McCartney show, his first global concert in 13 years, disregards all this and depends on the basic strength of his best music. But he also pushed Blessed Beatle to get off his ass and put on his faithful Hofner basso. After McCartney put himself into operation, he hired some trusted sidememen, not least Richard'Hard Day's Night' Lester, who pieced together a first film.
On stage, Beatle is at some point clamped between leading guitar player Robbie McIntosh and former average white band musician Hamish Stuart. There are Linda Mac and Paul Wickens on the keyboard, while Chris Whitten turns the whole thing upside down with his tough, straightforward drum. Outfitted like that, there's not much McCartney can't take. He sang between half a dozen tracks from the new record and a Trob by Fats Dominos Ain't That A Shame in Jet, Band On The Run, Got To Get You Into My Life, Eleanor Rigby and Let It Be.
Amidst many sudden movements the group blows up into a rough Sgt Pepper. Later they treat I Saw Her Standing There similarly rawly ankles, with McCartney barks the words through a rough gullet while the tape is shaking around him. MacCartney had done everything that could reasonably have been anticipated, and did it inappropriately well.
It may have taken McCartney almost 20 years to agree to that himself.
