He has been named skipper and navigation officer of the legendary Hokulea sailboat for his lead on the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage.

During his worldwide trip, he helped the members of the ship's crews share their experiences and inspire the fellowships to nurture themselves, each other and their environment and culture. The award was presented to Thompson and Oscar-nominated film maker Greg MacGillivray, who has created and staged some of the industry's most sustainable film.

Born in Hawaii, Nainoa Thompson is a sailor of the Hokule'a traditionally twin-hull canoes and president of the Polynesian Vacaging Society. She is a vivid source of the Hawaiian civilization and tradition. He' s the first of the Hawaiians to practise the skill of finding their way on long-distance sea journeys since the voyage in Hawaii around the fourteenth cent.

She has been a member of every great Hokule'a journey since she first put to sea in 1976, which included the 1978 trip with Big Aikau. His work included the design of three formats for IMAX, the high-speed digital stills ( "slow motion" camera), the industry's first light-weight and all-weather digital still photography system, which was used during the shooting at Mount Everest.
