What U.S. Virgin Island is best for you?

There are three Virgin Island Isles - St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix - all with luxuriant rainforest, unspoilt shores and caribean atmosphere. The best for: Favoured by pleasure cruisers, St. Thomas is the liveliest and most commercialised of the three isles.

The city has also a good name for more elevated, with lots of duty-free shops, high-end food and gulf. And unlike the other isles, St. Thomas has a bouncing night life after the night. Climb St. Thomas Skyride and drive to a point 700 ft above the island capitol Charlotte Amalie for spectacular overlooks.

Or take a dip with sealions in Coral World Ocean in Coral World Ocean Parc. To snorkel or dive, go to Coki Beach instead. The best for: Walking, observation of the countryside and solitude: there are no masses of them. This is because the island does not have a large international airfield - most take a boat from St. Thomas, about three mile away - and because almost two third of the island is sheltered as a natural area.

As soon as you arrive there, there is not much to do with local transport, shops or restaurants. If you are looking for a hidden outing or a romance, St. John is the place for you. Walk from one peak to the next, snorkeling the submerged path at Trunk Bay or exploring the remnants of the Virgin Islands National Park's sugary plantation.

The best for: Though it is the biggest of the three isles, St. Croix sees the least tourist, making it a great place to go if you want a less commercial Carribean city. Cruise to Christianted, where you can see the historical fortress and take a ferry to Buck Island to snorkel at one of the three only naval sites in the United States.

St. Croix is also home to Cruzan Rum and Captain Morgan Rum (both with guided visits and rehearsals) and the Estate Whim Plantation Museum. A gourmet who enjoys exploring the area, St Croix is home to Harvey's, considered Tim Duncan's favourite once he gets home.
