Southland has a harsh environment in comparison to most other parts of New Zealand. The average day peak of Invercargill in January is 18.7°C, as against 22.7°C in Christchurch and 23.1°C in Auckland. The long twilight of the summers, however, compensates for the colder temperature. New Zealand's winter is hard. Invercargill's average peak temperature in July is only 9.5°C, as against 11.3°C in Christchurch and 14.7°C in Auckland.

Invercargill's coolest temperature, -9°C, was registered on 4 July 1996. Southland' s low registered temperature was -18°C at Glenaray Station near Waikaia, in July 1946. In the interior of the country, there are often shivering in winters - Gore is 114 on average per year. They are less abundant and less serious in the coastline (Invercargill average 94), but pasturelands are everywhere blocked and stocks are being foddered with forage plants such as cabbage and beets.

As a rule, snows reach low values on the interior slopes. In July 1939, a heavy snowfall over the north Southland lasted six-week. The Invercargill has an annual mean of 1,682 sunny days, as against 2,003 in Auckland, 2,110 in Wellington, 2,142 in Christchurch and 1,683 in Dunedin.

Invercargill is New Zealand's second windmilling town, after Wellington, with an annual mean of 98 windbeats. Precipitation amounts to an annual mean of more than 1,000 millimeters near the coastline, but less than 1,000 millimeters in the interior. In Southland, the rainbow is common. New Zealand has the highest precipitation with an annual mean of 6,700mm.

1940, 9,197 millimeters were captured at the Homer Tunnel. The wetest place in Fiordland, Deep Cove in Doubtful Sound, has an annual mean of 8,750 millimeters.

Waiheke Wine Island Climate

In midsummer the sea breeze rises moderately. Oceans soften sinking temperature at nights. Because of its long, gentle seasons and the strong fluctuations in location and ground texture, Waiheke can cultivate and mature a greater variety of vine sorts. From a historical point of view, the rainy period begins in April and may threaten older cultivars such as Cabernet.

There is, however, a high default for precipitation in a given period, as precipitation usually falls in short-term floods.
