However, the Ross Sea area was frequented by relatively few travellers - much more so by the Antarctic Peninsula, which is a little warm and has more gamelife. The South Shetland Isles are a breathtaking island with an unbelievable wealth of wild animals and are an important stopover on any Antarctic Peninsula outing. The Arctic Ocean extends over 540 kilometers from the north-east to the south-west and consists of four different archipelagos with about 150 extra isles, archipelagos and rocky overhangs.
Probably the best-known of the South Shetland Islands is Deception Iceland with its submerged calendera of an energetic-volcan. There are several research sites on King George Islands, the biggest of which is devoted to research into the populations of Adélie and Chinstrap penguins, Kelpmöwen, Blue-eyed Cormorant, Antarctic Tern and Southern Giant Petrels.
Livingston is another beautiful place where you can see more penguins and bullfish. You have the option of landing twice a days, in places such as the stunning Paradise Bay and the actual mainland, and on the Isle of Paulet, where you can see the Adélie penguin and blue-eyed sea cormorants.
Further southwards you can explore Melchior Island, Cuverville Island, Portal Point, Neko Harbour and Pléneau Island. If the icy weather allows, you can also see the most southern penguin population on Petermann Island.
