Savaii!!!! There are some who really believe that Savaii is the embodiment of "Samoa". The majority of us think that when we reach Apia we will have arrived in Samoa, and that is where everything is and where you will be. A small expenditure in terms of travel to the " other " island (considering that Samoa consists of two large major isles, Upolu and Savaii) will certainly clarify you.

It is a huge and wonderful island full of untouched landscapes, Samoans in their native habitat and houses, and myths and places of age. When you think things will slow down a step or two in Upolu, you will take another five steps back in Savaii! There' s something about the island, maybe it's less hustle and bustle due to less transport, fewer high-rise blocks, more friendly happy smiles.

Perhaps it is more sensational sunrise and sunset or the silence in the sky that accompany such a time. However it is, this island has become a home in the hearts of many people, and when you come to Samoa, you should look forward to settling in Savaii. Coming from the boat you reach the small but busy town of Salelologa.

It is also remarkable that the bigger boat is a nice way to go; one passes the two small isles of Manono and Apolima and sometimes has a nice dolphin-education. A few folks also said that during this voyage there were also sightings of tortoises and cetaceans!

Don't be deterred by the unattractive entry to the quay; too many cabs, busses, dust and humans have stamped a small stain on it, which doesn't make it one of the most beautiful sight. Remember that this will be the only place on the island that looks bad! Other parts of the island are real jewels!

It' located to the south of the quay, about 10-15 minutes on foot or two minutes by car. Downstairs you will find stands selling home-made fruits and vegetables and products, and downstairs you will find a grocery store with a selection of favourite dishes (pork rolls and fry ) as well as your normal West European seafood and crisps!

The majority of riders can tell you whether or not they will pass your goal, so have the name of your holiday or town within your reach if you ask! Savaii's north shore is the favourite place for most lovers of the beaches. Fagamalo / Manase areas, about an hour's car ride away, are dotted with several seaside towns.

Many of them are very special in Samoa, as you will most likely live in a straw-covered cottage (fale) with the water and beaches right on your front door. The comforts of these resort are very simple (the rooms are usually open with bed linen and mattresses) and the establishments are usually divided, but there is a lot of commotion when you live in this way for a few nights, meet other travelers and natives and relax in the sunny on a nice sandside.

In general, the family run by the Strand Funes do their best to ensure that you are well nourished and maintained. It has a campsite feeling for most but it is a much more pleasant and relaxing area. The Lagoto is a nice but much more upscale residence with first-class amenities, a swimmingpoolbar, dives and rooms equipped with all the amenities you would want from an upscale residence.

You are much more costly than the avarage strand fale, but you definitely get what you are paying for if this is what you are after! It is a nice place to stay and eat, if at all, for the little luxurious thing when you camp on the water.

In Savaii itself, it's not just about the beach. Wonderful falls like Afuaau used to be hard to reach, but now the town has cut a street along the side of the river and you can go almost exactly to this wonderful swim at the foot of a cascade.

And there are spectecular blowholes in the town of Taga. A freshwater swimmingpool in front of a lake in the small hamlet of Satoalepai is home to a fistful of tortoises that float directly up and feed out of their hands. Local people will give you a small amount of green fruits so that you can do it yourself, and you can even go directly into the canal.

It' freshwater, but it'?s rather clammy. What is great about Savaii is that it is very simple to use. When you have your own car, a card will show you that there is actually a street around the island. The majority of the resort will have a restuarant and air-conditioned, closed facilities.

The Jetover Hotel is located in the centre of the resort and offers simple entrance to all stores and commercial facilities. The Siufaga is a little further away from the city and a little more expensive, but it is a nice accommodation with an Italien Ristorante (Parenzos) serving pizzas and noodles.

Savaiian Hotel is just a few driving steps from Salelologa, but it is a wonderful little place run by very hot and authentic locals and has a wonderful waterfront dining room that serves some of the most exquisite dishes in Savaii. Luckily, a trumpet orchestra will keep you entertained for the evening!

Its employees pay homage to the owner and provide hospitableness in a friendly and inviting Samoan style. Featuring a swimming pool, touring, kayaking etc., they are more of a haven than a motel, but for many it makes the big deal that the real owner who goes out of their way to make sure that you are cared for and that you get the most out of your stay in Savaii.

They are right next to one of only three vehicle hire companies on the island and are simple to arrange. They are well situated as they are within walking distance to the northern and southern parts of the island to see all the island's major tourist sites. Ask for a pick-up when you book with the Savaiian and don't be shocked if your owners make a trip to the estate to gather new products, coconut etc. for dinner!

Overall, the Savaii is a different kind of traveler than anywhere else, because strangely enough there are few travelers in Savaii. That is why they are still one with their own cultures, of which they are very proud and which they are pleased to be able to share with you. It is untouched and untouched, it is not interspersed with modern westerly sights or accessories, and the locals are kind and do not hesistate to be smiled.

Business closes in the evening, but the locals play volley ball, squeeze and play football, while the ladies take care of their well-kept and colorful yards. Old ladies weave, young men return from the plantation with basketful products, and you sit on your own beaches, on your terrace or in the middle of your pub and experience the respectable and unobtrusive welcome that Savaii subconsciously conveys to you.
